A tree of many symbols for the aboriginal peoples of Quebec, the White Pine is the tree of peace in Iroquois culture. Legend has it that a terrible conflict had been going on for generations between five Iroquois peoples. Legend has it that a peacemaker was sent by the Creator to unite the warring nations. To symbolize peace, he chose the white pine, no doubt because this tree bears its needles in clusters of five, representing the five nations. It's thanks to this aboriginal story that we understand why the White Pine is called "the tree of peace" and why it carries such power here. As an evergreen tree, the White Pine reminds us that the work of peace is never-ending; it's a work we must continue in our own lives, in our communities, in our families and in our hearts. When you see a White Pine, stop and enjoy its imposing presence and peaceful energy.
Have you ever noticed tall trees with wide branches reaching beyond the horizon on mountain tops? If so, they're probably White Pines. This tall conifer, which can reach over 40 metres, is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable trees in Eastern Canada. As well as being one of the tallest trees in our forests, it is also one of the widest in both trunk diameter and crown width. Its widest branches can reach some twenty meters, and its trunk over 1.5 meters. Adaptable to almost any environment, it prefers very sunny locations, as this is where it grows fastest.
This tree represents peace and unity.
