What is a funeral arrangement

Funeral pre-arrangements, or "prearrangements funéraires", allow you to plan in advance the details of a funeral for yourself or a loved one, including the choice of plot. Forêt de la seconde vie offers 5 forest areas for the resting place, as part of our reforestation initiative for a sustainable future.

Why make funeral prearrangements?

Preparing your funeral arrangements today has a number of significant advantages that can have a huge impact on your loved ones following your death.

Give your loved ones peace of mind

Your grief will already be a difficult ordeal for your loved ones. Without prearrangement, you're choosing to expose them to the difficult choices they'll have to make to honor your life, all while in a vulnerable state. Making your own funeral arrangements is a choice that respects the grief your loved ones will have to endure.

Inflation protection

Inflation is an economic issue that affects all industries, including funeral services. Choosing to pre-arrange today and pay now for your funeral services is suggested to obtain a favorable price and services in balance with the services you wish to use upon your death.

Respecting your wishes

Making funeral prearrangements is the safest way to ensure that your wishes are respected at the time of your death. The Pre-arrangements Act governs this sector, ensuring that your commitments are respected, and that the sums paid and deposited in trust are protected.

Are funeral arrangements covered by government programs (RRQ)?
Icon more

The Régie des rentes du Québec (RRQ) does not directly cover payments for funeral prearrangements in the event of death. However, the QPP does offer a death benefit, which is a benefit paid following the death of a contributor to the Quebec Pension Plan. This amount can be used by beneficiaries, often next of kin or the estate, to cover funeral expenses, including funeral prearrangements.

RRQ death benefit details :

  • Lump sum: The maximum benefit is a fixed amount of up to CAD 2,500. This amount is paid to the eligible person(s) (surviving spouse, heirs, or estate), and can be used for funeral expenses or other death-related costs.
  • Eligibility requirements: For this payment to be made, the deceased had to have contributed to the Quebec Pension Plan for a certain number of years.

What the RRQ doesn't do:

  • The RRQ does not directly manage funeral pre-arrangement payments or the funeral expenses themselves.
  • Funeral pre-arrangement contracts are usually underwritten by funeral service companies or private insurers.

Although the RRQ does not pay directly for funeral prearrangements, the RRQ death benefit can be used to cover these expenses after the contributor's death. If funeral prearrangements have already been paid for, this amount can help cover other death-related expenses.
