Butternut

This tree represents wealth and energy.

Long associated with divinities for its nourishing importance, walnut trees have held a special place among humans since Antiquity. The Latin name of the genus to which walnut belongs is Juglans, which literally means "Jupiter's nut". Walnuts were therefore considered the nuts of the gods. Along with their alimentary characteristics, many peoples attributed to them a divinatory capacity and a source of intelligence. This is not surprising, since walnuts are among the most nourishing nuts in our land. The spirit of the walnut reminds us that, in times of adversity, we must rely on our inner ability to discern which forces will help us and which will not.

Butternut is a medium-sized tree, growing to around 20 meters, but can reach 30 meters in the best conditions. Most wild populations of Butternut are found in the northeastern and central United States. In Canada, populations are restricted to southern Quebec and Ontario, and a few areas of New Brunswick, where the climate is mild and growing seasons longer. Butternut has a remarkable, almost tropical appearance, with clusters of leaves at the ends of its branches. It was used by the First Nations as a source of food, but also as a medicine thanks to its antimicrobial properties.
